High Performance Machining of Nodular Cast Iron Using Coated Carbide and Ceramic Tools

W. Grzesik, K. Zak

This paper reports the results of complex investigations when turning the pearlitic-ferritic nodular cast iron (NCI) using both CVD-TiC/Ti(C,N)/Al2O3/TiN coated carbide and silicon nitride ceramic tools. They include the cutting and feed forces, cutting temperature, friction, tool wear and obtainable surface roughness. In particular, some important differences in the process performance when using these two cutting tools are discussed. Cutting tests were performed under variable cutting speed between 160 and 320 m/min and feed rate varying between 0.04 and 0.28 mm/rev.
